Some diseases to be cautious of in summer

With the advent of summer, many people are relieved because that means less prone to diseases like common cold and the flu, but the change of season although leads to the reduced prevalence of such diseases brings about new set of diseases one need to be cautious about.

The warmth of the weather favors the growth of many different types of bacteria and other microorganism and leaves one susceptible to food poisoning. Bacteria loves warm and moist environment and summer provides the ideal condition to encourage their growth. The vulnerable group of people are mainly who take food out on picnics or the ones who dine in unknown places where hygiene is not assured. The main ways to prevent these modes of infection is by practicing proper hygiene, thorough washing of hands, cooking food completely and at the right temperature, washing the fruits and vegetables clean, and refrigerating the remaining food. Food borne infection usually present with diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, fever, fatigue and headache.

Another route of infection Is vector borne, especially with summer most of the bugs and mosquitos tend to seek shelter within homes and some carry dangerous microorganism and infect the one they bite. 

Dengue, one of the most common and dangerous disease in many countries caused by virus called the arbovirus transmitted by a type of mosquito called the Aedes aegypti, initially presenting with fever, nausea, vomiting, body ache and rashes. There is no specific treatment for dengue, management is carried out by taking anti fever medications and drinking plenty of fluids. Other diseases spread by mosquitos are West Nile fever, chikungunya and many more, ticks and fleas spread infections too like Lyme disease, typhus, rocky mountain spotted fever and etc.

Control and prevention saves one from fatalities, some of the measures that can be taken are, using of mosquito nets, lining the doors and windows with screens that prevent the entry of insects, contact here to hire professional to install them, using of insect repellants, wearing long sleeved shirts while going out.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy a swim in the lakes, rivers or pool, just to beat the heat but certain illness can be contacted through the water bodies too. Example: Naegleria fowleri causes a deadly disease called amebic meningoencephalitis. Naegleria fowleri is a type of ameba found in usually warm fresh water like lakes, ponds and non-chlorinated or insufficiently chlorinated water.

This organism enters through the nose and travels to the brain. Some of the ways to prevent this is chlorinating the pool properly, using nose clips while swimming, keeping the head above the water, staying away from diving in warm waters.

These diseases are worrisome but with prompt treatment and proper control these illnesses can be treated and avoided.
